There’s a moment, just after you arrive in Ba\u00f1os<\/a>, when you step out of the car and look up. To the south, framed by green valley walls, the summit of Tungurahua volcano disappears into clouds. A zip-line screams overhead. Someone is making candy on the main street, stretching taffy between two iron hooks in a hypnotic loop. And somewhere downstream, the Pastaza River is gathering itself for the canyon rapids that make this one of the most popular white-water stretches in South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ba\u00f1os de Agua Santa<\/a> packs an improbable amount of experience into a small Andean town. It sits at 1,800 metres above sea level, at the point where the Ecuadorian<\/a> Sierra meets the Amazon basin<\/a> \u2014 giving it a permanently mild climate, an extraordinary landscape, and access to two completely different ecosystems within a short drive. The town has a population of around 20,000, a cathedral that dominates the central plaza, and more adventure tour agencies per square kilometre than almost anywhere in South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ba\u00f1os sits in Tungurahua province, about 180 km south of Quito and 40 km east of Ambato. Its position at the mouth of the Pastaza River canyon \u2014 where the Andes plunge toward the Amazon jungle \u2014 is what makes it so geographically dramatic and logistically convenient as a base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Quito, the bus journey takes 3.5\u20134 hours and costs around $4\u20136 USD. Buses leave from the Quitumbe terminal (southern Quito) throughout the day. From Guayaquil, the journey is approximately 6 hours. There is no airport in Ba\u00f1os \u2014 most travellers fly into Quito and travel overland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Ruta de las Cascadas \u2014 The Waterfall Route<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The single most popular activity in Ba\u00f1os, and one of the finest cycling excursions in Ecuador. The Ruta de las Cascadas<\/a> descends 17 km from Ba\u00f1os to Puyo through a series of spectacular waterfalls \u2014 the highlight being\u00a0El Pail\u00f3n del Diablo<\/a><\/strong>, a thundering cascade through lush canyon walls dropping into the R\u00edo Pastaza below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The classic approach is to rent a bicycle ($8\u201312\/day) and descend almost entirely downhill, stopping at each waterfall along the way. You can also take a local bus or shared chiva (open-sided truck) and stop at viewpoints individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. The Swing at the End of the World \u2014 Casa del \u00c1rbol<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hidden in the hills above town at 2,660 metres, Casa del \u00c1rbol and its famous swing is what put Ba\u00f1os on the map for the most recent generation of travellers. The reality lives up to the photographs: a wooden swing perched on a steep ridge, with views over the valley and toward Tungurahua that are extraordinary on clear days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. White-Water Rafting on the R\u00edo Pastaza<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The upper section of the R\u00edo Pastaza offers Class III and IV rapids \u2014 the right amount of thrill for first-timers, serious enough for experienced rafters. Half a dozen agencies on the main street offer trips for $15\u201325 USD including equipment and guide. Most trips run 2\u20133 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go with an agency that uses certified guides and internationally rated equipment \u2014 the difference in safety standards between operators is significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Paragliding over the Valley<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tandem paragliding offers aerial views of the town, the surrounding Andes, and the descent toward the Amazon basin. Flights cost $40\u201360 USD for 20\u201330 minutes. No experience required. Best window is 10am\u20132pm on clear days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Thermal Baths (Aguas Termales)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
